I don't think birch was used as a symbol of the green movement in this project at all... which I am pretty sure is not overtly green. The statement is made by the architect and put as a reference to the tenets that seem to have driven the body of her work. A quick look at the website and one realizes Deborah Berke is likely far too austere to recommend any type of literal translation or trend such as "birch" to a project.
